I know what you are saying..."I've been breathing my whole life, I know how to do it" to which I would reply that it is true you have been breathing your whole life but while as a baby you did it properly, as we grow through life we pick up many bad breathing habits that can eventually become detrimental to our health.

You don't think about your breathing because it occurs naturally but chances are very high right now you do not breathe correctly and just by taking a little time each day to start becoming more consciously aware of your breathing and correcting any bad breathing habits you may have can make a world of difference in your life!

Breathing is Life.

In the book of Genesis it says...

"The Lord blew into Adam's nostrils the breath of life and Adam became a living thing".

There is a life energy that creates and flows through all living things.

Many cultures call this life-energy different things like Qi and Prana and believe that with each breathe you take, you absorb this spiritual energy into your physical body and improper breathing actually robs you of the very substance that creates life itself!

In a more scientific sense just like any machine that needs oxygen and some type of fuel to produce energy, our bodies need oxygen in order to metabolize the food we eat to produce energy.

Most health food gurus fail to mention in their fad diet books that food is useless to the body without the proper amounts of oxygen needed to metabolize it.

Like a candle, every cell in our body thrives or dies based on the amount of oxygen it receives and yet many of us are literally starving our cells of the fresh oxygen they need to thrive.

The first breathing problem most of us have is that we are shallow breathers.

breathing_highWith every complete breath you take there is a very important exchange taking place inside your lungs.

When you inhale, you infuse the blood running through your lungs with life giving oxygen an when you exhale toxins that where in your blood like carbon dioxide are expelled through your breath.

Most people only use the top 1/3 section of their lungs when they breath which is where only about 20% or so of the blood is actually circulating!!

Shallow breathers don’t fully complete the exchange at the bottom sections of their lungs where a majority of the blood is circulating which means your blood returns to your cells full of toxins and lacking the fresh oxygen your cells need to thrive.

Slow, deep, effortless and quality breaths ARE the foundation for a health body, mind and spirit!

Kahunka Breathing illustrationMany of us breathe through our mouths which is a very unhealthy thing to do. It’s said that mouth breathers are sicker more often and don’t live as long as nose breathers.

The simple reason is that the nose is designed to receive air starting with nose hairs that begin to filter the air before it reaches your lungs.

Mucus in the sinus cavities also trap bacteria and other invaders before they can find a home in your lungs. It is also here that the air is warmed and moistened making it ready to be received by your lungs.

Breathing through your mouth is like running your air conditioner or heater without the filter. When you bypass the filter, unfiltered air goes directly into your lungs just like this evaporator coil in this air-conditioning unit.

Think about this picture to the right of the debris clogging the coil (your lungs?) and make a conscious effort to start breathing through your nose and not your mouth.

Friends learning to breath properly is one of the most powerful and effective ways to improve all areas of your life.

The more oxygenated your blood is the more "alive" you will become.

Make it a point to start becoming consciously aware of your breathing throughout the day and just like you exercise your muscles, exercise your breathing and you will notice improvement in all areas of your life!
